Molly LaRocca, Certified Master Beekeeper and Classroom Educator

Meet Molly LaRocca: Combining a decade of classroom teaching experience with a deep love for pollinators, I specialize in bringing hands-on bee education to schools across the St. Augustine area. I hold a Bachelor's in Early Childhood Education, a Master's in Special Education, and a Master Beekeeper Certification all from the University of Florida.

Through these thoughtfully designed K-5 programs, students discover the different roles bees, and the vital work bees do for our food supply. I hope they walk away with a newfound respect for these incredible little creatures, replacing any fear with fascination!

Pre-K

Little Pollinators

Duration: 30 mins

Fee: $125

This lesson offers a gentle, tactile introduction to honey bees for young learners. This 30-minute presentation focuses on sensory exploration, allowing children to engage with tactile props and a simulated hive environment. Students will discover how bees act as nature's helpers and learn the importance of bees to our world.

Educational Standards
  • SC.K.L.14.1 – Recognize the five senses and related body parts.
  • SC.K.L.14.2 – Recognize that some books and other media portray animals and plants with characteristics and behaviors they do not have in real life.
  • SC.K.L.14.3 – Observe plants and animals, describe how they are alike and how they are different in the way they look and in the things they do.
Grades 1-2

All About Honeybees

Duration: 45 mins

Fee: $150

Dive into the inner workings of the colony! This lesson introduces the unique roles within the hive (Queen, Worker, and Drone), the essential jobs of a beekeeper, and the importance of keeping bees. Students will get hands-on experience examining hive products and authentic equipment, wrapping up with an exciting peek into our simulated hive.

1st Grade

  • SC.1.L.14.1 – Make observations of living things and their environment using the five senses.
  • SC.1.L.16.1 – Make observations that plants and animals closely resemble their parents, but variations exist among individuals within a population.
  • SC.1.L.17.1 – Through observation, recognize that all plants and animals, including humans, need the basic necessities of air, water, food, and space.

2nd Grade

  • SC.2.L.16.1 – Observe and describe major stages in the life cycles of plants and animals.
  • SC.2.L.17.1 –Compare and contrast the basic needs that all living things, including humans have for survival.
  • SC.2.L.17.2 – Recognize and explain that living tings are found all over Earth, but each is only able to live in habitats that meet its basic needs.
Grades 3–4

The Pollination Partnership

Duration: 45 mins

Discover the incredible partnership between plants and pollinators! Starting with a fun breakfast investigation, students explore how flowers are stuck in place, how they use bright petals and nectar to attract helpers, and the unique traits that make bees the ultimate delivery drivers. Wraps up with an exciting look inside our digital simulation hive!

  • SC.3.L.15.1 – Classify animals into major groups (mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, invertebrates) according to their physical characteristics.
  • SC.3.L.17.1 – Describe how animals and plants respond to changing seasons.

4th Grade

  • SC.4.L.16.1 – Identify processes of sexual reproduction in flowering plans, including pollination, fertilzation, seed dispersal and germination.
  • SC.4.L.17.4 – Recognize ways in which plants and animals impact the environment.

  • 3-5-ETS1-2 – Generate and compare multiple possible solutions to a problem based on how well each is likely to meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.

Ecosystems & Pollinator Protection

Explore the vital role bees play in our global ecosystem and food supply! Students take a more in-depth look at specific pollinators including carpenter bees, bumble bees, and honey bees to examine their unique traits and behaviors. Ultimately, this session empowers young learners to become environmental stewards by discovering practical, everyday ways to support and protect local pollinator populations in their own backyards.

  • SC.5.L.15.1 – Describe how, when the environment changes, differences between individuals allow some plants and animals to survive and reproduce while others die or move to new locations.
  • SC.5.L.17.1 – Compare and contrast adaptations displayed by animals and plants that enable them to survive in different environments.
